AJS S Series 1931

The AJS S Series 1931 was a range of motorcycles produced by AJS Motorcycles of Wolverhampton, England. The range consisted of three models: the S1, S2, and S3. All three models were powered by a 348 cc (21.3 cu in) single-cylinder engine. The S1 was the base model, with a rigid frame and no rear suspension. The S2 had a rigid frame with rear suspension, and the S3 had a sprung frame with rear suspension.

The S Series was a popular range of motorcycles, and was used by both civilian and military riders. The S3 was particularly popular with the military, and was used by the British Army during the Second World War.

Engine

The AJS S Series 1931 was powered by a 348 cc (21.3 cu in) single-cylinder engine. The engine was a four-stroke, air-cooled unit with a bore and stroke of 79 mm × 98 mm (3.1 in × 3.9 in). The engine was fitted with a single carburettor and a magneto ignition system. The engine produced 12 horsepower (9 kW) at 4,000 rpm.

Transmission

The AJS S Series 1931 was fitted with a three-speed gearbox. The gearbox was a hand-operated unit with a foot-operated clutch. The gearbox was mounted in the engine crankcase.

Frame

The AJS S Series 1931 was available with two different frame types: a rigid frame and a sprung frame. The rigid frame was made of steel, and the sprung frame was made of a combination of steel and rubber. The sprung frame was designed to provide a more comfortable ride than the rigid frame.

Suspension

The AJS S Series 1931 was available with two different suspension systems: no rear suspension, and rear suspension. The rear suspension was provided by a pair of adjustable friction shock absorbers. The front suspension was provided by a girder fork.
