Mercedes-Benz 190 (W201)
The Mercedes-Benz 190 (W201) is a compact executive car produced by Mercedes-Benz from 1982 to 1993. It was the first model in the marque's "190" series, and was available in both saloon and estate body styles. The 190 was a significant departure for Mercedes-Benz, as it was the first car in the company's history to be powered by a four-cylinder engine. It was also the first Mercedes-Benz to be front-wheel drive, and the first to be produced outside of Germany, with assembly plants in South Africa, Austria, and Finland. The 190 was a commercial success, with over 1.8 million units produced during its eleven-year production run.
The 190 was designed by Bruno Sacco, who also penned the W126 S-Class and W124 E-Class. The car's styling was influenced by the smaller W202 190E 2.3-16, which had been developed for the German Touring Car Championship (DTM). The 190's saloon body was characterized by its sharp angles and creases, while the estate version featured a more traditional silhouette.
The 190 was offered with a range of four- and six-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. The base model was the 190E, which was powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine producing 90 hp (66 kW). The most powerful model was the 190E 2.6, which was powered by a 2.6-liter six-cylinder engine producing 160 hp (118 kW). The 190 was also available with a range of optional extras, including power steering, air conditioning, and a sunroof.
The 190 was a well-received car by both the press and the public. It was praised for its handling, performance, and build quality. The 190 also performed well in safety tests, and was one of the first cars to be awarded a five-star safety rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The 190 was discontinued in 1993, and was replaced by the W202 C-Class. The 190 is now considered to be a classic car, and is highly sought after by collectors.
