The XJ/YJ was powered by a variety of engines, including a 2.5-liter four-cylinder, a 4.0-liter inline-six, and a 2.8-liter V6. The four-cylinder engine was available with a carburetor or fuel injection, while the inline-six and V6 engines were fuel-injected only. The XJ/YJ was available with a five-speed manual transmission or a three-speed automatic transmission.

Four-Wheel Drive System

The XJ/YJ's four-wheel drive system was called Command-Trac. Command-Trac was a part-time four-wheel drive system that allowed the driver to select between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. Command-Trac also featured a low-range gear reduction that could be used for off-road driving. The low-range gear reduction allowed the XJ/YJ to crawl over obstacles at low speeds.

Suspension

The XJ/YJ's suspension was designed for off-road driving. The front suspension was an independent coil-spring suspension, while the rear suspension was a solid-axle leaf-spring suspension. The XJ/YJ's suspension provided excellent ground clearance and articulation, which allowed it to travel over rough terrain.
