The Audi A4 introduced the "B5" chassis in 1995, succeeding the Audi 80 of the B4 generation. The A4 was available in sedan and Avant (station wagon) body styles, with either front-wheel drive or Audi's quattro all-wheel drive system. The A4 featured a MacPherson strut front suspension and a new multi-link rear suspension, which improved handling and ride comfort over the previous Audi 80.

Initially, four engines were available for the A4: a 1.6-liter inline-four, a 1.8-liter inline-four, a 2.4-liter V6, and a 2.8-liter V6. The 1.6-liter engine was only available in Europe, while the 1.8-liter engine was available in both Europe and the United States. The 2.4-liter V6 was initially only available in the United States, while the 2.8-liter V6 was available in both Europe and the United States. The A4 was updated in 1999 with a facelift that included new headlights, taillights, and bumpers. The 1.6-liter engine was dropped from the lineup, and the 1.8-liter engine was now available in a turbocharged version. The 2.4-liter V6 was replaced by a 2.5-liter V6, and the 2.8-liter V6 was now only available in the United States.

The A4 was a popular car, and it was praised for its handling, performance, and luxury. It was also awarded the "Car of the Year" award by Motor Trend magazine in 1996. The A4 was discontinued in 2001, and it was replaced by the Audi A4 B6 generation.
