It was designed to compete with the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, BMW 7 Series, and Audi A8. The Phaeton was based on the Volkswagen D1 platform, which it shared with the Bentley Continental GT and Flying Spur. It was powered by a variety of engines, including V6, V8, and W12 units. The Phaeton was available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. It was praised for its high levels of comfort, refinement, and safety but undistinguished and expensive. Production ended in 2016, with no direct successor.
