General Description
The Nuffield Universal Three and Universal Four were general-purpose farm tractors produced by the Nuffield Organisation in the United Kingdom from 1948 to 1965. They were powered by a 3.4-liter (210 cu in) diesel engine and featured a four-speed gearbox and a differential lock. The Universal Three was available in two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, while the Universal Four was only available in four-wheel drive.
Engine
The Nuffield Universal Three and Universal Four were powered by a Perkins P4 diesel engine. The engine was a four-cylinder, inline design with a displacement of 3.4 liters (210 cu in). It produced 42 horsepower (31 kW) at 2,000 rpm. The engine was equipped with a Bosch injection pump and a CAV fuel filter.
Transmission
The Nuffield Universal Three and Universal Four were equipped with a four-speed gearbox. The gearbox was a constant-mesh design with four forward gears and one reverse gear. The gears were shifted by a lever on the left-hand side of the driver's seat.
Differential Lock
The Nuffield Universal Three and Universal Four were equipped with a differential lock. The differential lock was engaged by a lever on the right-hand side of the driver's seat. When the differential lock was engaged, the wheels on both sides of the tractor turned at the same speed, which improved traction in slippery conditions.
