Overview



The Kawasaki Z400F, Z500F, Z550F, GPz400, and GPz500 are a family of motorcycles produced by Kawasaki from 1983 to 1985. They are all powered by inline-four engines, with the Z400F and GPz400 having a displacement of 399 cc (24.3 cu in), the Z500F having a displacement of 499 cc (30.4 cu in), and the Z550F and GPz500 having a displacement of 544 cc (33.2 cu in). All models have a six-speed transmission and shaft drive.

The Z400F and Z500F are naked bikes, while the Z550F and GPz400-500 are sport bikes. The GPz400-500 models have a full fairing, while the Z550F has a half fairing.

Engine



The engines in the Z400F-F2, Z500F, Z550F, GPz400-500 are all inline-fours with four valves per cylinder. The Z400F and GPz400 have a bore and stroke of 58 mm × 49 mm (2.3 in × 1.9 in), while the Z500F has a bore and stroke of 62 mm × 53 mm (2.4 in × 2.1 in). The Z550F and GPz500 have a bore and stroke of 66 mm × 53 mm (2.6 in × 2.1 in).

All models have a compression ratio of 10.5:1 and are fueled by a single Mikuni carburetor. The Z400F and GPz400 have a maximum power output of 45 PS (33 kW) at 9,500 rpm and a maximum torque output of 3.6 kg⋅m (26 lb⋅ft) at 8,500 rpm. The Z500F has a maximum power output of 50 PS (37 kW) at 9,500 rpm and a maximum torque output of 4.0 kg⋅m (29 lb⋅ft) at 8,500 rpm. The Z550F and GPz500 have a maximum power output of 55 PS (40 kW) at 9,500 rpm and a maximum torque output of 4.5 kg⋅m (33 lb⋅ft) at 8,500 rpm.

Transmission



All models have a six-speed transmission and shaft drive. The Z400F and GPz400 have a final drive ratio of 2.667:1, while the Z500F, Z550F, and GPz500 have a final drive ratio of 2.778:1.

Suspension



The Z400F and Z500F have a telescopic fork front suspension and a swingarm rear suspension with dual shocks. The Z550F and GPz400-500 have a telescopic fork front suspension and a Pro-Link rear suspension with a single shock.

Brakes



The Z400F and Z500F have a single disc brake in the front and a drum brake in the rear. The Z550F and GPz400-500 have a dual disc brake in the front and a single disc brake in the rear.
