The Ford Mondeo was launched in 1992 as Ford answer to the dominant European family car market. Ford of Europe designed the Mondeo as a world car with development costs shared globally. The first generation Mondeo was available as a sedan, hatchback, and estate wagon with a wide range of engines from economical 1.6 liter inline 4 to the powerful 2.5 liter V6 in the high performance ST200 variant.
The Mondeo platform featured Ford new generation EEC IV and later EEC V engine management systems, multi link rear suspension for superior handling, and an all independent front MacPherson strut setup. The first generation Mondeo was also notable for being one of the first family cars to offer a factory installed V6 engine option. Built in Ford state of the art Genk Belgium plant and later at Halewood England, the Mondeo won European Car of the Year in 1994.
