The City Crown by Bruno Taut - Ulrike Altenmüller-Lewis

The City Crown, designed by Bruno Taut and Ulrike Altenmüller-Lewis, represents a groundbreaking concept in urban planning and mobility. It is a visionary architectural structure that integrates transportation, housing, and public spaces within a single, self-contained entity.

The City Crown takes the form of a massive, elevated ring-shaped structure that encircles the central core of a city. The ring is supported by a series of massive, tapered piers that rise high above the ground. The piers are strategically placed to create a continuous, covered walkway that provides a protected and comfortable pedestrian thoroughfare around the entire perimeter of the structure.

At the base of the ring, a continuous, multi-level transportation system weaves its way through the piers and supports. This system includes a network of high-speed rail lines, automated people movers, and dedicated lanes for personal vehicles. The transportation hub is seamlessly integrated with the pedestrian walkway, allowing for easy and efficient movement throughout the City Crown.

The interior of the ring is divided into a series of discrete neighborhoods, each with its own unique character and identity. The neighborhoods are connected by a network of elevated walkways and bridges, creating a vibrant and interconnected pedestrian-friendly environment. Within each neighborhood, a mix of residential, commercial, and public spaces ensures a diverse and self-sustaining community.

The residential units within the City Crown are designed to maximize natural light and ventilation while providing privacy and comfort. They range in size and configuration, from small studio apartments to spacious family homes. Each unit features floor-to-ceiling windows that offer panoramic views of the city below.

The commercial spaces within the City Crown include a wide variety of retail shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues. These spaces are strategically located to create vibrant and bustling street-level environments that foster social interaction and community engagement.

The public spaces within the City Crown are designed to provide opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and cultural enrichment. They include parks, plazas, and gardens that offer a respite from the bustling urban environment. The City Crown also features a dedicated cultural district that houses museums, theaters, and other cultural institutions.

The City Crown is a truly sustainable urban environment. Its elevated structure minimizes the impact on the ground-level environment, while its integrated transportation system reduces reliance on personal vehicles and promotes public transit. The use of passive solar design and energy-efficient technologies further reduce the environmental footprint of the City Crown.

Overall, the City Crown by Bruno Taut and Ulrike Altenmüller-Lewis is a visionary architectural and urban planning concept that redefines the way we think about cities. It is a model for sustainable, interconnected, and pedestrian-friendly urban environments that promote social interaction, economic prosperity, and cultural vibrancy.

This book is the first English translation of the German architect Bruno Taut's early twentieth-century anthology Die Stadtkrone (The City Crown). Written under the influence of World War I, Taut developed The City Crown to promote a utopian urban concept where people would live in a garden city of 'apolitical socialism' and peaceful collaboration around a single purpose-free crystalline structure. Taut's proposal sought to advance the garden city idea of Ebenezer Howard and rural aesthetic of Camillo Sitte's urban planning schemes by merging them with his own 'city crown' concept. The book also contains contributions by the Expressionist poet Paul Scheerbart, the writer and politician Erich Baron and the architectural critic Adolf Behne. Although the original German text was republished in 2002, only the title essay of The City Crown has previously been translated into English. This English translation of Taut's full anthology, complete with all illustrations and supplementary texts, fills a significant gap in the literature on early modern architecture in Germany and the history of urban design. It includes a translators' preface, introduction and afterword to accompany the original composition of essays, poems, designs and images. These original texts are accompanied by illustrations of Taut's own designs for a utopian garden city of 300,000 inhabitants and over 40 additional historic and contemporary examples. The new preface to The City Crown explains the premise for the English translation of Taut's anthology, its organization and the approaches taken by the translators to maintain the four different voices included in the original work. Matthew Mindrup's introduction critically examines the professional and intellectual developments leading up to and supporting Bruno Taut's proposal to advance the English garden city concept with a centralized communal structure of glass, the city crown.
