The 1996-2005 Mazda Drifter/Ranger is a compact pickup truck that was manufactured by Mazda. It was available in both regular cab and extended cab configurations, and with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. The Drifter/Ranger was powered by a variety of engines, including a 2.3-liter inline-four, a 2.5-liter V6, and a 3.0-liter V6.

The Drifter/Ranger was a popular choice for buyers who wanted a small, fuel-efficient pickup truck. It was also a popular choice for off-road enthusiasts, thanks to its available four-wheel drive system.

Design

The Drifter/Ranger was designed to be a small, maneuverable pickup truck. It had a short wheelbase and a narrow track, which gave it a tight turning radius. The Drifter/Ranger was also relatively lightweight, which made it fuel-efficient.

The Drifter/Ranger's exterior design was simple and functional. It had a boxy shape with a tall, vertical grille. The headlights were located on either side of the grille, and the taillights were located on the rear of the truck.

The Drifter/Ranger's interior was also simple and functional. It had a basic dashboard with a few gauges and controls. The seats were comfortable and supportive, and there was plenty of room for passengers.

Powertrain

The Drifter/Ranger was powered by a variety of engines, including a 2.3-liter inline-four, a 2.5-liter V6, and a 3.0-liter V6. The 2.3-liter inline-four was the base engine, and it produced 140 horsepower and 150 lb-ft of torque. The 2.5-liter V6 was optional, and it produced 160 horsepower and 165 lb-ft of torque. The 3.0-liter V6 was the top-of-the-line engine, and it produced 190 horsepower and 220 lb-ft of torque.

The Drifter/Ranger was available with either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic transmission. The five-speed manual transmission was standard on the base model, and the four-speed automatic transmission was optional. The four-speed automatic transmission was standard on all other models.

Suspension and Steering

The Drifter/Ranger had a front independent suspension and a rear semi-independent suspension. The front suspension consisted of MacPherson struts, and the rear suspension consisted of a solid axle with leaf springs. The Drifter/Ranger's suspension was tuned for a comfortable ride and handling.

The Drifter/Ranger had a rack-and-pinion steering system. The steering system was responsive and precise, and it made the Drifter/Ranger easy to maneuver.

Brakes

The Drifter/Ranger had four-wheel disc brakes. The front brakes were ventilated, and the rear brakes were solid. The Drifter/Ranger's brakes provided good stopping power and feel.

Safety

The Drifter/Ranger was equipped with a variety of safety features, including airbags, anti-lock brakes, and traction control. The airbags were located in the front seats and the dashboard. The anti-lock brakes prevented the wheels from locking up during braking, and the traction control helped to keep the Drifter/Ranger from skidding on slippery surfaces.

The Drifter/Ranger received good safety ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). The NHTSA gave the Drifter/Ranger a four-star rating for frontal crash protection and a five-star rating for side crash protection.
