### CITROEN CX 1974-1993

The Citroën CX is a large executive car produced by the French automaker Citroën from 1974 to 1991. It was designed by Robert Opron and was the last car to be launched under the leadership of Citroën founder André Citroën. The CX was a critical and commercial success, winning the European Car of the Year award in 1975.

The CX was notable for its distinctive design, which featured a long, sloping bonnet and a steeply raked windscreen. It was also one of the first cars to be equipped with hydropneumatic suspension, which gave it a very comfortable ride. The CX was available with a range of petrol and diesel engines, with the most popular being the 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre petrol engines.

The CX was a popular choice for taxi drivers and private buyers alike. It was also used by a number of governments and organisations, including the French government and the British Royal Family. The CX was discontinued in 1991, but it remains a popular classic car today.

**Design**

The Citroën CX was designed by Robert Opron, who had previously designed the Citroën SM. The CX was a large car, measuring 4,895 mm in length, 1,840 mm in width, and 1,430 mm in height. It had a long, sloping bonnet and a steeply raked windscreen, which gave it a very distinctive look.

The CX was one of the first cars to be equipped with hydropneumatic suspension. This system used a combination of hydraulic fluid and nitrogen gas to provide a very comfortable ride. The suspension was also self-levelling, which meant that the car's ride height remained constant regardless of the load.

**Engines**

The Citroën CX was available with a range of petrol and diesel engines. The most popular petrol engines were the 2.0-litre and 2.2-litre units. The 2.0-litre engine produced 109 bhp, while the 2.2-litre engine produced 128 bhp. The diesel engines were less powerful, but they were more economical. The most popular diesel engine was the 2.5-litre unit, which produced 75 bhp.

**Transmission**

The Citroën CX was available with a four-speed manual transmission or a three-speed automatic transmission. The manual transmission was the most popular choice, as it was more efficient and provided better performance.

**Performance**

The Citroën CX was not a particularly fast car, but it was comfortable and refined. The 2.0-litre petrol engine could accelerate the car from 0-60 mph in 11.3 seconds, while the 2.2-litre petrol engine could do it in 10.3 seconds. The diesel engine was slower, taking 17.5 seconds to accelerate from 0-60 mph.

**Handling**

The Citroën CX was a good handling car for its size. The hydropneumatic suspension gave it a very comfortable ride, even on rough roads. The car also had good grip and cornered well.

**Equipment**

The Citroën CX was available with a range of equipment, including power steering, air conditioning, and a sunroof. The car also had a number of safety features, including anti-lock brakes and airbags.

**Price**

The Citroën CX was priced from £10,995 when it was launched in 1974. This made it one of the most expensive cars on the market, but it was also one of the best-equipped and most comfortable. The CX remained in production until 1991, by which time it had been replaced by the Citroën XM.
